Carbohydrates - filling up on 'hearty meals' is good for you

The high- fat, low- carb diet fad has taken another blow to its reputation as a quick fix solution to fast and healthy weight loss. This time by research funded by the British Heart Foundation. The study by scientists at Oxford University found diets low in carbohydrates and high in fats, can reduce energy stored in the heart by an average of 16% and in some cases down to a third.

More long-term research is needed though, but scientists are still keen to emphasise low-carb dieting is not recommended to those wishing to lose weight and maintain a healthy heart. Instead, maintaining a balanced diet by fuelling up on the right kind of carbohydrates will sustain energy levels and control your appetite throughout the day.

Sylvana Franco separates the wheat from the chaff to see which carbs will really help our hearts tick.
